Volunteers for Special Olympics Hawaii’s 2010 ‘Aukake Classic

Aloha Friends!

Over 400 Special Olympics Athletes from across the State are busy training to compete in the 2010 ‘Aukake Classic. Scheduled for August 21-22, 2010, this statewide soccer and bocce tournaments will be held at Wai’au District Park in Pearl City.

As you all know, we heavily rely on you, our wonderful volunteers to staff our events and we need your help again! I’ve attached a chart that lists all of the volunteer positions available, as well as the volunteer registration forms (please use the group form if you are signing up 5 or more volunteers). This is our smallest sporting event of the year so sign up now, as positions will go fast! As usual, confirmations will be done on a first come, first serve basis.

Over the Edge of Waikiki for the Special Olympics

Wow, this is not for the feint of heart! Raise $1000 for Special Olympics Hawaii and you’ll be able to rappel over the edge of Waikiki’s tallest building, landing at the Edge of Waikiki which is the Sheraton Waikiki’s new adult infinity pool and bar. Crazy huh? The Over the Edge of Waikiki event takes places on November 13th, 2009 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. You need to be 18 and less than 300lbs. to participate.

Learning Lift off in Legoland – Students in Need in Waianae

We received a message yesterday from the teacher, Ms. K., thanking us for our donation to the “Learning Lift Off in Legoland“. She needs lego sets for her students whom face extreme poverty out in Waianae. Unfortunately she still needs $417 to fully fund this project.

Some stats from Ms. K.

Nine-year-olds growing up in low-income communities are already three grade levels behind their peers in high-income communities.

Half of them won’t graduate from high school by the time they’re 18.

I’m hoping we can gather enough people to each donate just a small amount, the cost of one lunch, to Ms. K’s classroom. You can view the message we received here. You can also donate from that page as well. Thanks for reading!

Bishop Museum and the Hawaii Food Bank

Hi folks, the Bishop Museum will be offering a special promotion from February 5th to the 12th. For each can of food you donate you get $1 off the price of admission. The limit is $3, but hey, why not bring even more cans for this great cause. It’s in support of the Hawaii Food Bank’s Annual Food Drive. This special applies to both regular and kama’aina rates for both adults and children. We’ve got an annual membership to the museum but what better way to help a good cause and have friends join you at the museum for a discounted admission rate!

Ohi`a Domestic Violence Shelter

I received a thank you card today for a monetary donation I made to the Ohi`a Domestic Violence Shelter this past Christmas. Our company was trying to raise enough money to build them a kids playground at their facilities.

For those that don’t know about it, the shelter:

offers a safe and confidential facility for women and their children who can no longer remain in their homes because of domestic violence.

I hope this year we can do more to assist them as its a cause worth supporting. Contact me if you would like more info or a contact person at the shelter, thanks!

Lokahi Tree

This past December the company I work for, Archinoetics, worked at the Lokahi Tree warehouse for a few hours. Other then the fact that I was sick and the place lacked any semblance of air conditioning, it was a very rewarding experience.

For 2 hours we basically stuffed stockings with donations. There were a ton of t-shirts from Harley Davidson and we sorted them by size the stuffed them stockings. I wanted to take photos but in my cough medicine induced haze I forgot. Not to mention I had a fever and that place was super hot, I thought I was gonna pass out…

This year our company put together a committee to work on charitable work and donations. I’ll keep everyone posted as to what we do this year, it’s sure to be a rewarding and fun list.
